How to use the .ORG WHOIS
This WHOIS allows you to look up domain names in the .ORG registry database.
This database contains all registered .ORG domain names and .ORG domain names
only.
-
To search for a .ORG domain name, simply type in the domain name you are
looking for.
-
This domain name must be a second-level domain name such as "pir.org."
(Third-level domain names such as "hello.pir.org" are not contained within this
WHOIS.)
-
Do not enter the "http://www" prefix.
This WHOIS reflects up-to-the-minute registrations. If the domain name you are
searching for is not contained within the .ORG WHOIS database, it probably is
available for registration.
For more information on how to register a domain name, go to
Get a .ORG Domain Name.
For other top-level domains (TLDs), go to:
Record and key types
A WHOIS query may contain four records – Domain Record, Nameserver Record, Contact Record and Registrar Record. A WHOIS query for each of these records will return key types (or fields) specific for that record. For a complete listing of the key types (fields) for each record, see
Record and Key Types.
Searches, keywords and modifiers
Searches are not case sensitive. You may search for ASCII alphanumeric
characters and hyphens; other characters are not accepted for use in .ORG
domain names. A search will return a maximum of 50 results.
PIR's WHOIS server will look up information by domain name, name server and
registrar.
Keywords
The .ORG WHOIS searches only for domain name records unless you choose another
option. However, you can perform other types of searches by using specific
keywords. Keyword searches are helpful because they can yield fewer, closer
matches. The following keywords will help you narrow your search.
-
To search by domain name, simply type the domain name you are looking for. The
".ORG" extension is optional. You may type domainexample or
"domainexample.org."
-
To search by IP address, type "host 121.23.2.7." At this time, host name
lookups can be performed only on .ORG hosts and not hosts related to other
TLDs.
-
To search by host or type of name server, type "host NS01.EXAMPLE.ORG." At this
time, host name lookups can be performed only on .ORG hosts and not hosts
related to other TLDs.
-
To search by registrar, type "Registrar Registrarname."
Modifiers
Use the following modifiers to further tailor your searches. You can use
modifiers in conjunction with keywords.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
ID
|
|
Search ID fields. This applies to registrar IDs.
Example: "Registrar ID R1324-LROR"
|
FULL or =
|
|
Always show detailed results, even for multiple matches.
Example: "= domainnam%"
|
summary
|
|
Use "summary," "SUM" or "$." Always show summary results,
even for multiple matches.
Example: "summary name smith, john." This control can be used in combination
with an ID query.
|
%
|
|
Partial string search. Use the "%" symbol as a suffix on name
or ID searches; this will produce all records that start with that string.
Example: A search for "organi%" will return "organize.org," "organic.org," etc.
Note: The wildcard character is not allowed in the ".org" or "-LROR"
portion of the input string. If ".org" or "-LROR" is not included in the input
string, it will be implied at the end of the string, except for IP address and
registrar organization queries.
|
-
|
|
Use the underscore symbol as a suffix to produce all records
that start with that input string and have one and only one additional
character.
Example: A search for "brand_" will return "brands.org," "brandy.org," etc.
Note: If ".org" or "-LROR" is not included in the input string, it will
be implied at the end of the string, except for IP address and registrar
organization queries.

Terms found in the .ORG WHOIS database
Domain Status: These values detail pending operations and/or restrictions
regarding the domain name. Normally operating domain names have a status of
"OK." If a registrant has any question regarding a domain name status, the
registrant should contact the sponsoring registrar listed in WHOIS for that
domain name.
Domain name statuses that are set by the registry:
-
OK: This is the normal status value for a domain object at all times, whether
or not the domain name has pending operations or prohibitions.
-
Hold: The domain name will not be published in a zone file for Domain Name
System (DNS) resolution. Domain names without at least two name servers are
placed on "Hold" status until you submit name server data to your registrar.
-
Pending Delete - Restorable: A delete request has been received for the
domain name, and it will remain in this Redemption Grace Period (RGP) status
for 30 days, unless restored. The domain name also is placed on "Hold" status,
which removes it from the zone file (meaning that no Internet services,
including e-mail and Web sites, are available for that domain name) but it has
not yet been purged from the registry database. The domain name cannot be
renewed, deleted, transferred or updated while in this state. By contacting the
sponsoring registrar, the registrant can request that the domain name be
restored. For more information, see "Frequently
Asked Questions: Redemption Grace Period.
-
Pending Delete - Scheduled for Release: At the end of RGP, the domain name
will move to this Redemption Hold Period status for five days prior to being
released for re-registration. The domain name cannot be restored, renewed,
deleted, transferred or updated while in this state.
-
Pending Transfer: A transfer request has been received for the domain, and
completion of the request is pending. The domain name cannot be deleted or
updated while in this state. A domain name that has pending transfer status MAY
be auto-renewed.
-
Delete Prohibited: The domain name cannot be deleted.
-
Renew Prohibited: The domain name cannot be renewed.
-
Update Prohibited: The domain name cannot be updated.
-
Transfer Prohibited: The domain name is restricted from being transferred to
another registrar. Please note that within the first 60 days of registration or
within the first 60 days following a transfer, a domain name will be placed in
"Transfer Prohibited" status.
-
Inactive: A domain name with this status usually does not have the required
name servers associated with it.
Domain name statuses that are set by the sponsoring registrar and cannot be
changed by the registry:
-
Client Delete Prohibited: The registrar has set the status so the domain name
cannot be deleted.
-
Client Renew Prohibited: The registrar has set the status so the domain name
cannot be renewed.
-
Client Update Prohibited: The registrar has set the status so the domain name
cannot be updated.
-
Client Transfer Prohibited: The registrar has set the status so the domain name
cannot be transferred.
-
Client Hold: The registrar has set the status so a domain name is removed
from the zone file - meaning that no Internet services, including e-mail
and Web sites, are available for this domain name.
Sponsoring Registrar: The registrar that currently administers the domain name
on behalf of the registrant. If the domain name was registered through a
reseller, the reseller's name will not appear in the "Sponsoring Registrar"
field. Instead, you will see the reseller's registrar. Resellers are companies
that use the tools of accredited registrars (such as back-end systems and
customer service) to register domain names.
Reserved names
Some domain names are not available for registration by the public.
Some names are reserved for use by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names
and Numbers (ICANN) and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and for
reasons related to the Domain Name System. For example, ICANN requires that all
one-character and two-character .ORG domain names be reserved from initial
(i.e., nonrenewal) registration. For more information, see the ICANN
Web site.
In addition, Public Interest Registry (PIR) is allowed to register certain
domain names. For more information, see the ICANN
Web site.
