The
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the
nonprofit organization that manages and coordinates the Domain Name System. It
focuses on preserving the stability of the Internet; promoting competition;
achieving broad representation of global Internet communities; and developing
policy through bottom-up, consensus-based processes.
On Dec. 2, 2002, ICANN and Public Interest Registry (PIR) entered into an
agreement under which ICANN granted PIR the right to operate the .ORG
top-level domain (TLD).
Materials regarding the .ORG reassignment can be found on
ICANN's Web site and on the
Internet Society's Web site.
ICANN provides a complete list of all
accredited domain name registrars, which is updated occasionally. All
.ORG-authorized registrars are accredited by ICANN.
