Tradition on the grass; cutting-edge online.
Of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the four most prestigious tennis
tournaments in the world, only The Wimbledon Championships are still played on
grass. Held at the All England Club in London, Wimbledon is known for
tradition. Its Web site, however, makes the most of today's technology.
"Wimbledon.org is one of the most visited sports Web sites on the Internet,"
reports David Bates, Web systems producer for the All England Lawn Tennis &
Croquet Club. "During the 2003 Wimbledon fortnight, the Web site attracted more
than 4 million unique visitors."
Throughout the season of The Championships, the Web site provides up-to-date,
point-by-point scores; news; statistics; dedicated radio commentary; and other
information about the tournament. During the rest of year, the site offers
general information, such as advice about purchasing tickets, and feature
articles.
The Wimbledon Web site has both .ORG and .COM addresses. "Wimbledon chose the
.ORG suffix because it is a not-for-profit organization; the surplus from The
Wimbledon Championships is donated to the Lawn Tennis Association," Bates says.
"The .COM suffix is used alongside .ORG so visitors who try .COM will be able
to find the site, but all publicity materials advertise the Web site as
wimbledon.org."
